“Staying active and moving have always been a big part of my life. Dance classes, long-distance running in my early twenties, hiking, skiing, and gardening have all given me release and joy.
Especially when sharing these activities with others, as it gives me a sense of community and connection; something we all need.”
“First dance recital with my Brother Bob”
Like many girls who grew up in the 1960s, organized sports were not readily available to me, but dance classes were. Dance gave me an outlet for my energy. It helped build my coordination, confidence, and ability to cooperate and work with others. From my first ballet class at the age of five, I was hooked on dancing and I have never stopped.
Fortunately for me, my opportunities to dance and learn new expressions of it continued to expand. For instance each semester of college (Chico State), I enrolled in dance classes which included Jazz, Modern, and Ballroom. Dance, once again, provided me with the balance that I needed and at this stage of my life, a respite from sitting and studying.
It was also during this time, and on a whim, that I took a Belly Dance class in the community; then found a troupe of women with which to practice and perform. Over the years, I have been fortunate to have been part of several Belly Dancing tribes of talented and supportive women.
I am no longer a full-time teacher in the classroom, but I will always identify with being an educator. Lifelong learning and developing new skills and knowledge are critical for my well-being, as is sharing with others. Creating classes that improve health and bring joy to others makes me happy!
In 2006, a good friend suggested that I investigate the therapeutic dance program called Healthy Steps. She thought it would be a perfect fit for me, given my teaching and dance background. I followed her advice and signed up and completed the training with Sherry Lebed-Davis, the founder of the program. I have been continuously teaching Healthy Steps since then.
With Covid hitting in March 2020, it created new challenges for us all; it pushed me to develop online zoom classes. I started my Zoom classes with a low-tech Dell computer and really spotty internet. A small but dedicated seed group began to form. Now, I have upgraded my computer and internet and teach classes with participants from all over the United States. It continues to be so rewarding, keeping me in a growth mindset.
Presently, there are Healthy Steps classes available in the Chico Community at: Enloe Regional Cancer Center, Chico Area Recreation Center, The Terraces Senior Living, and online classes as well. Look under the “class tab” or call 530 228-4753 to learn about other classes currently offered.
